Good morning to all but a special shout out to my brother Koichi on the occasion of his birthday. Happy birthday little brother and here's my prayer that you have many more to come! Waine and I were able to come back to Atlanta for a little respite and it is so good to be in my house with my memories surrounding me. Waine and I have so many years of memories and so many more years of memories to come. I am so looking forward to that. Waine and I went to the see the movie with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones last night. The movie centers on a couple who stopped remembering why they were in love and had to rediscover it. The good news is that they did and Waine and I were celebrating that we knew why we loved each other and then celebrated some more.
I am continuing my journey in Jeremiah 32, verses 26 - 44, "Then the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? Therefore this is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it. The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods. The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth; indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger with what their hands have made, declares the Lord. From the day it was built until now, this city has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove it from my sight. The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done—they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline. They set up their vile images in the house that bears my Name and defiled it. They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek, though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind —that they should do such a detestable thing and so make Judah sin. You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety. They will be My people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul. This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them. Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians. Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord.” Amen! May God add a blessing to the reading and hearing of His Word.
God has made an everlasting covenant with us through Jesus Christ! Hallelujah! I wonder if Christians really understand this--He has made an everlasting, everlasting, everlasting COVENANT with us. In these verses the covenant includes prosperity which God was going to honor not because the Jews were righteous but BECAUSE HE PROMISED IT! The Jews were getting ready to become captives of the Babylonians--they were getting ready to be delivered to the very people with whom they worshipped the gods of Baal. These Babylonians would plunder their land and destroy all their possessions. Now keep in mind the Jews decided they would identify with the Babylonians by denouncing God and accepting their gods. Sound familiar? How many times have you tried to "fit in" to be accepted? How many times have you kept your Christianity hidden so as not to make waves? How many times has your pride prevented you from being humble and apologizing for a wrong caused? How many times have you rationalized your behavior that you knew was wrong? When Christians stop putting God through Christ on the throne of their lives, we are Baal worshippers and as such will experience calamity just as the Jews did. What's wonderful about this passage though, is that God's covenant with us never waivers. We may suffer the consequences of our sins but WE WILL AWAYS BE RESTORED!! God loves us no matter what. His love is secured and infinite and when we come out of sin, it is always into the warmth of His love. Hallelujah!!! No matter what circumstance you might find yourself in today because of your sin, never fear you will be restored because there doesn't exist a situation that is too hard for God. He is just waiting for you to turn from sin and turn to Him. This is the covenant of love that we have inherited. God bless you and God bless His Son who died for us while we were YET IN SIN. What love is that!!
Now may the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.
